Lara Lancaster (née Mackenzie Lee) is an artist and illustrator working in an entirely contemporary style. She works on both private and commercial commissions, extending illustration to products, events, and interiors.
Having studied Fashion Communication & Promotion at Central Saint Martins (London, 2016), her artwork emphases the use of mark-making as a means to communicate and interpret the essence of a subject, notably the human mind and figure, through the considered abstraction of colours and shapes.
Originally inspired by contemporary dance, capturing movement is an essential component in everything she paints or draws, and nature is a constant reference. Through an interdisciplinary mix of colour, pencil, and translucent paper cut-outs, Lara uncovers her subject’s true essence and energy. The resulting layered compositional portraits suggest links to abstract expressionism.
The subject’s characteristics and personality are conveyed through the subtle texture, detail and materiality of drawing, challenging the audience to look beyond the obvious physical constraints of the subject.
Lara is based between London and Sydney and is a regular contributor to SHOWstudio and art gallery Gray M.C.A, having collaborated on a number of commissions and exhibitions worldwide.
